Tracy Hankins is our Controller at Jim Butler Imports and Jim Butler Chevrolet. She originally started with Jim Butler Auto Group's Saturn locations about 14 years ago. Tracy was born and raised in the St. Louis Area. There is actually a funny story about her first car buying experience.

When Tracy was still in college looking to buy her first new car, she shopped all over with her dad. They drove all over St. Louis but ended up buying her New 1991 Chevy Cavalier from the dealer that treated him right, Jim Butler Chevrolet on Watson Road. Who would have known that she would end up working at Jim Butler Chevrolet a few years later?

Since Tracy oversees a lot of the behind the scenes work at two Jim Butler stores, she is often spending a lot of time at the dealerships. When she isn't at work, she really likes to enjoy her kids. She is married with two boys and a girl. Their favorite thing to do is explore the parks all over the St. Louis Area, especially hiking trails less traveled. Tracy can always be found rooting for the home team no matter how good or bad they are doing. Finally, reading has become something that she rarely has time for but she does love reading, particularly the "Harry Potter" series.

Favorite cars of past and present - Tracy doesn't necessarily have a favorite vehicle of the past, but she did have a blast last summer when she got to take home a New 2011 Chevy Camaro Convertible SS.

Employee Spotlight - Hollie Krebbs

Hollie Krebbs joined the Jim Butler Chevrolet Team about a year ago as an Administrative Assistant. Previously she had worked at another dealership but took a few years off to be a full-time mom. Hollie is originally from St. Louis, and actually grew up on Grant's Farm. Her Dad was a caretaker for the animals so she grew up around a lot of the Busch family and obviously some really cool animals.

Hollie loves spending time with her daughter, and also making clothes for her. In fact, Hollie loves making things for her daughter so much that she even has her own baby boutique that she runs out of her basement. Hollie's other hobbies are photography, shopping and recycling stuff into new things.

Employee Spotlight - Tony Castiglioni - Master Technician

If you've visited Jim Butler Chevrolet in the past 14 years for our Service Department, then most likely Tony has been the man fixing your bowtie. Tony Castiglioni is a long time Butler Chevrolet Employee, and also a St. Louis native. He is an ASE Master Technician and GM Certified Service Technician.Tony has been in the automotive repair business for the past 33 years, he has definitely achieved a lot.

When Tony isn't working at the dealership, he leaves his work at work. He often can be found fishing on one of many lakes in Missouri and especially enjoys the Lake of the Ozarks.

Now lets take you back to Tony in 1990. Tony is a rare bird, he has logged over 1600 sky dives and was also on sky diving competition teams. He once did a team dive formation with 130 people, got to sky dive into Busch Stadium in '82 and his favorite place to dive is the desert. In 1990, his life changed a little bit and Tony decided to settle down, get married and start having a family of his own, so risking his life for a high flying adventure had to go. One day Tony hopes to get back up in the air but for now you can find him on the ground at Jim Butler Chevrolet.

He has been a Parts Associate at Jim Butler Chevrolet in St. Louis for the past 4 yeaers, and has about 10 years in the automotive parts business.

When Andrew isn't fulfilling our customers GM parts needs, he likes to battle it out on the paintball gamefield or enjoy his salt-water aquariums. His escape only goes about that far from the automotive realm because his biggest hobby is a 1970 Chevelle with a 400 small block, fully restored interior and fresh midnight blue paint. He is a father of twin identical twins, and happily married.

Brian started at Jim Butler's GM Certified store off of Watson Rd., which was one of the first stand alone GM Certified Stores in the St. Louis Area, and the United States. Brian is not only a die hard Chevrolet fan, but he is also one of the most passionate Jim Butler Salespersons that you'll find at our store. Brian's father even worked for Jim Butler Chevrolet a total of 36 years as a Service Technician.

Brian grew up in Fenton, MO, less than 10 minutes from our location in the Gravois Bluffs. He enjoys watching his 2 golden retrievers play in the lake behind his house and also taking his 35' Fountain to every lake he can get to within driving distance or one of St. Louis' rivers when the water isn't too high. Although Brian does enjoy football and baseball, he really enjoys camping, fishing and taking a Sunday to watch NASCAR.

August Employee Spotlight - Kelly Schneider

Kelly Schneider joined the Jim Butler Chevrolet Team last year as an Internet Sales Consultant. She is a St. Louis native and has been a great addition to the team and really enjoys her job. Her favorite thing about the job is helping someone through the process of buying their very first new or pre-owned vehicle, she says "there is just something about how excited people get during the purchase of their new car that makes me happy."

When Kelly isn't answering questions about the great selection at Butler Chevrolet, she is usually watching either the Cardinals or the Blues. St. Louis Blues hockey is her ultimate favorite between the two, and David Backes is her favorite player to watch. Kelly's favorite time of year is just around the corner, she loves the Fall because it is perfect weather to drive around in her convertible. Finally, Kelly enjoys spending time with family and friends, as well as reading books (her favorite is "Gone with the Wind").

Sneak Peek at the 2013 Chevy Malibu

The 2013 Malibu has an elegant, formal sheetmetal for a sporty look. The Malibu evolves to the Opel Insignia/Buick Regal's Epsilon II architecture to lose 4.5 inches in wheelbase. Chevy worries buyers will think it has shrunk. After all, Buick markets the Regal as a "sport sedan," explaining its tight rear-seat space, so Chevrolet is quick to note that overall interior space is increased more than 3 cubic feet relative to the current Malibu, putting it in the ballpark of the Toyota Camry and Ford Fusion. That's because the new Malibu has grown 2.7 inches wider, so big increases in shoulder and hip room compensate for slight losses in legroom and front headroom relative to the 2012 Malibu. Mark Moussa, Malibu's global chief engineer explains that relative to the Regal, his packaging engineers have greatly increased shoulder room, tightened the clearance between the headliner and the exterior roof panel, and lowered the H-point.

Perhaps its most striking feature, after styling, is that it will be offered only with four-cylinder engines. There's no V-6 in the works. That's pretty forward thinking for Chevy, even if Buick, Hyundai, and Kia got there first.

To take advantage of consumers' shift from trucks and big SUVs to more fuel-efficient cars, GM put Chevy Malibu development on the fast track after the 2009 bankruptcy, and moved up its launch by more than half a year. The '13 Malibu will go on sale not long after Super Bowl XLVI. It launches in ECO trim, with the 2.4-liter four-cylinder with eAssist as Chevrolet continues to build the old Malibu (Classic?) through the 2012 model year for fleet/rental. This ensures a launch with minimal dealer incentives and potentially higher average transaction prices (ATP).

About half a year later, Chevy will add an all-new 2.5-liter four-cylinder option. The only transmission offered for either engine is GM's six-speed automatic. Chevy will offer a turbodiesel and a smaller four in other markets.
The new Malibu has been designed to be a global sedan, sold in China -- it was unveiled at the Shanghai show, a day ahead of the New York International Auto Show -- and throughout Asia, Europe, and the quickly growing markets in South America. In Australia, it will be the Holden Malibu.

It's a big piece of the strategy puzzle that has Chevrolet becoming GM's true global brand. In western Europe, the Chevy strategy pushes Opel/Vauxhall back to where it was in the '60s and '70s: an upper-middle, semi-premium brand like Buick.

The goal in the U.S. is to make the Chevy Malibu a best-seller again, though the Impala presents a complication. With fleet sales and dealer incentives, the current, prehistoric Impala competes not with other cars in its class, but with the Malibu. When the Chevy Impala moves to the long-wheelbase version of Epsilon II for the 2014 model year (a RWD 2015 Caprice will likely follow), it will be more competitive with cars like the Ford Taurus and Toyota Avalon, leading to a higher ATP and lower volumes.

The Chevrolet Volt may prove that GM can still do cutting-edge high tech. Success or failure of the '13 Malibu will prove whether GM has truly become a new company and whether it can find success with and profit from mainstream, affordably priced products.

Is it a Super Sport?
GM has proper engines. The 220-horsepower, 2.0-liter Ecotec Buick Regal CXL Turbo engine would be perfect for a Malibu RS. A Malibu SS would require the Regal GS's high-output 2.0-liter turbo, which makes 270 horsepower at 5300 rpm and 295 pound-feet at 2500-4000 and gets a respectable 19/29-mpg with the optional six-speed manual. "I'd say, stay tuned," Mark Moussa hints. "You may be pleasantly surprised in the future."

Why the 2012 Camaro V6 makes more power & MPGs

The 2012 Chevrolet Camaro will feature 323 horsepower, or 11 more ponies than the 2011 model. But General Motors engineers didn't accomplish this feat by adding direct injection or variable valve timing. In fact, the 2011 version of the 3.6-liter V6 already incorporated those high-tech engine components.

Instead, engineers were able to add extra power by allowing the high-tech mill to breathe better. To do this, intake airflow was improved by seven percent through extensive simulation and bench testing. As a result, power is up by 11 horsepower, while exhaust flow is improved by 10 percent.

Engineers also manged to remove an incredible 13 pounds from the 3.6-liter by integrating the exhaust manifolds into the aluminum cylinder head. This change meant that a pair of old-school iron manifolds, 12 bolts, a pair of gasket and heat shields with six more bolts were eliminated.

Beyond weight savings, these changes also eliminate the potential for gasket failure while fuel efficiency is improved. The 2012 Camaro 2LS model will now boast 30 miles per gallon on the highway, up from an also respectable 29 mpg from the 2011 model.

Meet one of our long-time employees, Doug McConnell. He has been working for Jim Butler Chevrolet for 27 1/2 years! Doug is definitely an important part of providing great automotive service at Jim Butler Chevy. Doug started with us back at the 9900 Watson Rd. location in Crestwood and has been fixing Chevrolets ever since. He has extensive GM training and is an ASE Master Technician, so you could pretty much say he is the "go to guy" for anything automotive. Doug also has more vacation time accrued than most of the staff at Jim Butler Chevrolet.

When Doug isn't at the dealership, he likes to get a little R&R at Goose Creek Lake in Ste. Genevieve. Aside from owning 8 cars, Doug's has a passion for motorcycles and rides with the Kirkwood Chapter Motorcycle Club. Mizzou & Ram's football are his fall football favorites for Saturdays and Sundays at home.

Introducing our June 2011 Employee Spotlight, Ashley Gansner. Ashley is the Title Clerk/Biller at Jim Butler Chevy, and has been working at the Fenton location almost since it opened 3 years ago. She graduated from Jefferson College and is also a Jefferson County native.

Ashley has always enjoyed cheerleading, and was a cheerleader all through high school as well as 1 year at college. Some of her favorite things to do include traveling, enjoying the outdoors, and going to the popular Missouri wineries. Ashley is pretty excited about one thing these days, and that is her first cruise! Although she isn't quite sure where she is going yet but she does know when, October. Otherwise Ashley has been captivated with renovating her condo in her spare time.

Brittany started in December 2010, and was a little nervous about working in the busy Service Department. Brittany had previously worked at a collections agency where she absolutely hated her job, and now she is actually enjoys her job. Although Brittany didn't know anything about cars when she started working at Jim Butler Chevy, she said they teach her a little something new every day, but don't worry she won't be working on your car anytime soon. Brittany is still pursuing her dream career of becoming an EMT (Emergency Medical Transporter), and is looking to go back to school soon.

Brittany is a true St. Louis girl, that "bleeds blue" as they say and is a fanatic for the St. Louis Blues hockey team. She would also like to have a vote to get 1 day out of the year that is a National Hobby Day, where businesses would close in order to give their employees a chance to do something they love to do, like camping or floating in Southern Missouri. Reluctantly Brittany currently drives a Honda but has been eying the New 2011 Chevy Cruze, which is her favorite car.

NEW YORK – Chevrolet celebrated Earth Day at the New York Auto Show by introducing the all-new 2013 Malibu ECO, the most fuel-efficient midsize sedan in its 100-year history. It features eAssist™ “light electrification” technology, which is engineered to deliver an estimated 26 mpg in city driving and 38 mpg on the highway without compromising performance.

ECO is based on the all-new, 2013 Malibu sedan, which will be sold in nearly 100 countries on six continents. Sales of the new Malibu begin with the ECO model in the United States in early 2012. The Malibu LS, LT and LTZ trim level offerings join the ECO in summer 2012. Pricing will be announced later.

“The Malibu ECO is a smart choice for customers who want excellent fuel economy without the price premium of popular hybrid sedans,” said Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. “The Malibu ECO’s 38-mpg highway estimate is comparable with those hybrids.”

Malibu’s eAssist system uses a state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery and an electric motor-generator to enable regenerative braking electric assist and start-stop functionality. It is efficiently sized, weighing only 65 pounds (29 kg).

Malibu ECO also features an aerodynamic exterior – including underbody aero enhancements – and electronically controlled shutters in the lower grille that close at higher speeds to push more air over and around the vehicle. These enhancements increase aerodynamic efficiency to boost fuel economy.

An ECO gauge in the cluster continuously responds to driving behavior, encouraging fuel-efficient driving, while an Auto Stop Indicator on the tachometer informs the driver when the engine is in start-stop mode.

“Malibu ECO exemplifies Chevrolet’s drive to use technology that delivers high-value, gas-friendly performance,” said Scheidt. “In fact, the Malibu ECO delivers the fuel economy of a compact car in a midsize sedan.”

eAssist details

Malibu ECO’s eAssist system is mated to a 2.4L Ecotec direct-injection four-cylinder engine and next-generation six-speed automatic transmission. The 2.4L engine is efficient and lightweight, featuring dual-overhead cams, direct injection, continuously variable intake and exhaust timing and electronic throttle control, as well as a lightweight aluminum cylinder block and cylinder head. It is rated at an estimated 180 horsepower (134 kW) and is a variant of the same engine that was recognized as one of Ward's Ten Best Engines in 2010.

Along with the Ecotec 2.4L and six-speed transmission, the eAssist system uses power stored in the air-cooled, lithium-ion battery to provide needed electrical boost in various driving scenarios, optimizing engine and transmission operation. An advanced 115V lithium-ion battery and latest-generation 15-kW motor-generator unit help increase fuel economy through:

Regenerative braking, which provides up to 15 kW of electricity to charge the battery
Providing up to 15 hp (11 kW) of electric power assistance during heavier acceleration
Using electricity instead of gasoline when stopped, with automatic and smooth engine start-stop functionality
Aggressive fuel cut-off during deceleration down to zero mph for added fuel savings
Intelligent charge/discharge of the high-voltage battery.

The eAssist system captures up to 15kW of energy that would be normally lost during braking and uses it to recharge the lithium-ion battery. The system also shuts down fuel delivery in certain deceleration conditions, further improving fuel economy. While in fuel shut-off mode, the motor-generator unit continues spinning along with the engine to provide immediate and smooth take-off power when the driver presses on the accelerator. As the vehicle comes to a stop, the engine’s start-stop function is active when the motor-generator unit brings the engine to a smooth stop to position it properly for a smooth restart when the brake is released.

A hill-assist system captures brake pressure to help keep the vehicle stationary when eAssist’s start-stop function is activated on a moderate or steep grade, allowing the driver to accelerate more smoothly from a stop.

Malibu ECO’s eAssist power pack brings together the lithium-ion battery, the integrated power inverter and 12V power supply. It is located in the trunk, behind the rear seat. The electric motor-generator is mounted to the engine in place of the alternator to provide both motor assist and electric-generating functions through an engine belt-drive system. The motor-generator is a high-performance, compact induction motor that is liquid-cooled for increased performance and efficiency. An electric fan cools the power pack, drawing air from a vent located behind the rear seat.

Thanks to eAssist technology, which also enables a numerically lower final drive ratio, the Malibu ECO can travel as much as 550 miles between fill-ups, despite having only a 15.8-gallon gas tank.

Aero efficiency

Malibu ECO – and the entire 2013 Malibu lineup – was designed to be aerodynamically efficient, with a coefficient of drag near the standout performance of the Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric vehicle.

Aerodynamic design engineers removed about 60 counts of wind drag from the new Malibu, compared to its predecessor. Malibu spent hundreds of hours in GM’s wind tunnel, fine-tuning the form to maximize fuel efficiency. For example, engineers shaped Malibu’s front corners so that air runs close and uninterrupted along the body sides to the rear of the vehicle.

Malibu ECO is among the first in the midsize segment with a fuel-saving, active shutter system in the lower grille. The Malibu Eco’s active shutter system automatically closes airflow through the lower intake opening when air intake is least needed. When closed, the shutter system enhances aero performance by redirecting airflow around the front of the vehicle and down the sides, rather than through it. The shutter is open or closed based on engine coolant temperature and speed. For example, the shutters open when the car is traveling up a hill, pulling a trailer, or in hot city driving; the shutters close at highway speeds when engine cooling is less required.

Other aerodynamic features on the Malibu ECO include:

Outside rearview mirrors designed to maximize aerodynamic efficiency
Taillamps are shaped for aero performance without design penalty
Four underbody panels – more commonly found on premium-priced cars – cover approximately 50 percent of the lower portion of the vehicle and provide an aerodynamically clean flow path under the vehicle
Standard 17-inch wheels and low-rolling-resistance tires engineered to improve fuel economy.

The exterior design of the all-new Malibu carries DNA from its sister vehicles, the Camaro and Corvette. Other exterior design cues include Chevrolet’s dual-port grille, projector HID headlamps, larger Chevrolet bow-tie badges front and rear, and new Camaro-inspired LED dual-element taillamps. The look is complemented by a range of large 17-, 18- and 19-inch wheels.

The new Malibu exterior is anticipated to be SAE-certified as one of the most aerodynamically efficient cars in the segment, with a coefficient of drag (Cd) rating near Chevrolet Volt’s Cd of .280. Because of Malibu’s new shape and design, engineers were able to remove 60 counts of wind drag compared to the model it replaces.
Malibu also has electronically controlled and integrated active aero shutters (select models in North American markets) to improve aerodynamics and enhance fuel economy without sacrificing the exterior design.

It is expected to be one of the most efficient of its size in the market. New features include enhanced authority continuously variable valve timing, variable-displacement oil pump and electronic thermostat that save fuel, while delivering V-6-like performance. Malibu production in the United States begins in early 2012. 2011 Chevrolet Traverse is a 7-seater crossover that has a 3.6L V6 that makes 288 hp and still puts up big numbers in the fuel efficiency category. 2011 Chevy Volt earns 10best rank by Car and Driver!

To put it simply, the Chevy Volt was far and away the biggest surprise to every editor at this year’s 10Best event. None of us imagined that nestling into the glass cockpit would bring the words “automotive bliss” and “electric vehicle” together in the same sentence. The smooth-riding Volt can’t shred tarmac like a VW GTI or infuse fun into the family-sedan segment like a Honda Accord or a Hyundai Sonata. Think of the Volt as smile-inducing Xanax for range anxiety—something all other EVs evoke. Canceling the range limitation from the EV equation doesn’t make it perfect, though. A tight back seat, limited cargo capacity, and a general lack of horsepower—though plenty of low-end grunt to merge onto the highway like you have somewhere to be—would normally eliminate a 3800-pound porker from contention. However, one would need to be driving straight through the Library of Congress to detect the switchover from EV mode to gas-electric hybrid operation. And maximizing the electric range by curtailing full-throttle or full-brake episodes brings its own kind of driver engagement. Best of all, its efficiency is unmatched, as long as interstate travel is omitted. One editor drove the Volt 101 miles in 18 hours (including a 10.5-hour charge) and only used one gallon of gas. That’s some seriously eye-opening arithmetic.

2012 Chevrolet Corvette-Centennial Edition- Coming to Jim Butler Chevrolet!

DETROIT – Chevrolet, founded by a racing pioneer 100 years ago, celebrates its performance heritage with the 2012 Chevrolet Centennial Edition Corvette, which features a sleek black color scheme, unique design elements and Corvette’s trademark sports car technology.

The 2012 Centennial Edition package will be available on all Corvette models – including Grand Sport, Z06 and ZR1 – starting this summer.

The special package was inspired by Chevrolet’s racing-bred foundation, which continues with Corvette’s international racing excellence and production sports car prominence.

“Racing and performance are the roots of Chevrolet, a tradition carried forward today by Corvette,” said Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. “The Centennial Edition not only celebrates our 100 years, it once again pushes Corvette forward for a new generation of sports car fans.”

Chevrolet will auction a Corvette Z06 Centennial Edition at the Barrett-Jackson collector car auction in West Palm Beach, Fla., on April 9, with the proceeds to benefit the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer. It will be the 100th 2012 Corvette off the assembly line, with a vehicle identification number ending in “00100.”

The Chevrolet Centennial Edition Corvette expresses racing heritage, but does so with a sleek, modern, even sinister-looking appearance. The Centennial Edition package comes exclusively in Carbon Flash Metallic, with satin-black graphics and unique Centennial Satin Black wheels and red brake calipers. The wheels are constructed of lightweight cast-spun aluminum and include a thin red outline around the perimeter of its surface on the Z06. The wheels are specific to the respective Corvette models, including 18-inch/19-inch for Coupe, Convertible and Grand Sport; and 19-inch/20-inch for Z06 and ZR1.Magnetic Selective Ride Control, the world’s fastest-reacting suspension and a technology advance initiated by Corvette, is included on all Chevrolet Centennial Edition Corvette models.

The Centennial Edition also features special badges that signify Chevrolet’s racing history. A graphic logo featuring an iconic image of Louis Chevrolet appears on the B-pillars, the center caps of the wheels, and the center of the steering wheel. The seat headrests also carry an embossed centennial logo.

Aficionados will note one other small detail: The historic crossed flags badge contains a small adaptation, with “100” in place of the traditional fleur-de-lis symbol, only for the Centennial Edition.

The exterior color scheme is reinforced inside the car, with the Ebony leather-wrapped instrument panel and doors complimented by red stitching on the steering wheel, seats, console and shifter. Microfiber suede accents on Centennial Edition seats, steering wheel, shifter and armrests were first used on the 2011 Z06 Carbon Limited Edition.

The Chevrolet Centennial Edition will be available on all Corvette models via order code ZLC. Pricing will be released this summer prior to the start of availability.

“Louis Chevrolet was a fearless racing pioneer who also designed our first car,” Scheidt said. “Corvette is a natural fit to honor that legacy, while creating a compelling new package for sports car drivers.”

Barrett-Jackson auction details

Chevrolet chose to debut the Centennial Edition Corvette at Barrett-Jackson to enable the auction proceeds to go to the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer. The foundation supporting children and families dealing with cancer is a key partner with the American Le Mans Series, in which Corvette Racing is an integral participant.

The 2012 Chevrolet Centennial Edition Corvette Z06 (VIN 100) to be auctioned is based on the production 3LZ model with the Z07 performance package, new Z06 carbon fiber hood and CFZ carbon fiber package, which includes:

IIHS Top Safety Pick--2011 Chevrolet Traverse

DETROIT – The 2011 Chevrolet Traverse today received a Top Safety Pick designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for all models built after January.

“Car buyers shopping for safety get a big head start with vehicles earning our Top Safety Pick designation,” said Institute president Adrian Lund. “This award highlights the elite group of vehicles that earn top Institute safety ratings across the board, and that have electronic stability control.”

Vehicles named Top Safety Picks must achieve the highest possible IIHS ratings of “Good” in front, side, rear and rollover crash protection tests in addition to having electronic stability control.

The Traverse earlier earned a 5-star overall vehicle score in the revised New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) run by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The 2011 Traverse represents Chevrolet’s commitment to continuous safety – before, during and after a crash. Before a crash, active safety features like StabiliTrak electronic stability control, traction control and anti-lock brakes help drivers avoid crashes.

Technologies like rollover sensing, six standard air bags, front seat safety belt pretensioners and load limiters help protect occupants during a crash. Pretensioners reduce safety belt slack, and load limiters moderate the load of the safety belt on the occupant in a crash. Both safety belt technologies work together to help keep occupants in place during a crash.

After a crash, OnStar’s Automatic Crash Response alerts first responders to get medical assistance on site as quickly as possible.

“The IIHS Top Safety Pick Award reinforces the already strong safety reputation of the Traverse,” said Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet Marketing. “Traverse is a well-equipped crossover that provides the people- and cargo-carrying capability typically found in larger SUVs – all delivered in a proven safe and efficient package.”

Development ongoing, targeting launch at the beginning of 2012
CHICAGO – The 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 debuted today at the Chicago Auto Show. It is the highest-performing Camaro and the most technically advanced car ever developed in its class. The new ZL1 continues the momentum of Camaro, propelling it into an entirely new realm of leading-edge performance technology. It is planned to launch at the beginning of 2012.

Motivated by a supercharged V-8 engine producing an estimated 550 horsepower (410 kW), the Camaro ZL1 will be the fastest Camaro ever offered by Chevrolet. And more than just power, the ZL1 features technologically advanced and highly developed chassis and suspension systems that help it deliver balanced, track-ready handling and braking power to complement its high engine output. Rigorous development of the ZL1 is ongoing, and official estimates of the car’s capabilities will be released later in 2011, as testing nears completion.

“Camaro ZL1 is about high-tech performance and design, and is a type of car no one has ever brought to this segment previously,” said Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. “It’s the most technically advanced Camaro ever, so we’ve chosen a name from the most elite and exclusive Camaro in history.”

The ZL1 name is derived from the all-aluminum racing engine of the same name, which was developed in the late 1960s and installed into a handful of regular-production 1969 Camaros. Only 69 were built with the engine, but they’ve achieved mythical status among enthusiasts, as they represented the pinnacle in Camaro performance – until now. The 2012 ZL1 model is designed to be a major leap forward for the Camaro, bringing a new level of performance capability to the segment.

The central goal of the car’s development was creating something new – a Camaro intended to reach optimal lap times on top road-racing circuits and excellent driving dynamics on the street. To achieve that goal, engineers evolved many of the existing Camaro’s systems, as well as incorporated new technologies such as electric power steering and Magnetic Ride Control, the world’s fastest-reacting suspension system.

Camaro ZL1’s design communicates and supports its performance mission. Rather than using decorative elements, ZL1 is visually differentiated from other current Camaro models with elements vital to the car’s elevated capabilities.

“Everything about the ZL1’s design is directly related to its technology and serious performance, especially aerodynamics,” said Ed Welburn, vice president, Global Design. “Our designers’ goal was to execute that function-oriented design with beautifully sculpted forms, creating an imposing, powerful persona. Function becomes the aesthetic. The intent is a car that delivers on the attitude it projects.”

Major elements of the ZL1’s design are a new front fascia and hood with air extractors, designed in tandem to create aerodynamic downforce to aid handling. The car’s hood includes a signature center section constructed of carbon fiber and rendered in satin black finish. New rocker panels, wide tires, 20-inch wheels and exhaust tips portray the car’s handling and power.
The ZL1 badge appears on the grille, hood and the brake calipers, all key areas portraying the technology within.

Tech overview
Supporting the dynamic track and street performance of the ZL1 is the LSA 6.2L supercharged engine, which will produce an estimated 550 horsepower (410kW) and 550 lb.-ft. of torque (677 Nm), with specific features for the Camaro. Built on GM’s legendary all-aluminum, small-block V-8 architecture, the LSA features an intercooled supercharger system, premium heat-resistant aluminum-alloy cylinder heads and other details designed to ensure its exceptional performance is delivered with smoothness and refinement. Components and design elements that contribute to the LSA’s performance include:

Balanced, lightweight reciprocating assembly
High-strength hypereutectic pistons
Sixth-generation Eaton supercharger with four-lobe rotors
Piston oil squirters.

Because the Camaro ZL1 uses electric power steering, the engine does not incorporate a conventional hydraulic power steering pump on its accessory drive system. This enhances performance, because no engine power is used to turn a steering pump pulley.

Camaro ZL1 is a complete high-performance car, not just a Camaro with more power. Key technical highlights include:

Transmission – The high-performance Tremec TR-6060 six-speed manual is matched with the LSA engine. It is the “MG9” version of the transmission, with a higher torque capacity. It is used with a dual-mass flywheel and twin-disc clutch for easy operation and shift smoothness. A new, shorter-throw shifter actuates the gear changes.

Exhaust – ZL1 is equipped with a dual-mode exhaust system, which alters the sound level and character in response to engine rpm. First used on the legendary Corvette, and specifically tuned for Camaro ZL1, the dual-mode exhaust will give the car a signature sound.

Drivetrain – It is revised with a stronger driveshaft and rear axle system, featuring a larger and stronger cast iron differential housing, stronger axles and heavy-duty limited-slip differential. This patent-pending system is designed to ensure that ZL1’s tremendous power is delivered smoothly to the ground.

Suspension – The suspension features completely revised tuning and the inclusion of segment-exclusive Magnetic Ride Control. ZL1’s Magnetic Ride system will include driver selectable modes (Tour and Sport) tailored for the preferred style of driving. It uses advanced magneto-rheological science to produce shock damping with the highest level of precision, enabling body control optimized for excellent performance in everyday driving as well as track situations. This technology appears on only a small roster of some of the world’s finest performance cars. Other chassis elements are redesigned to support the car’s high-performance limits. Rear stabilizer bars have drop links repositioned outboard of the control arms. This makes the bars more effective in controlling body roll in turns, with crisp response to driver commands.

Brakes and Steering – Camaro ZL1 features an advanced track-capable braking system, developed in conjunction with experts from Brembo. The large 14.6-inch (370 mm) two-piece front rotors have six-piston calipers; the 14.4-inch (365 mm) rear rotors have four-piston calipers. ZL1 marks the entry of a new electric power steering system to Camaro. It is being developed to ensure precise control and feedback to the driver, with greater variability of effort for high-performance driving.

Exterior – ZL1’s signature from the front is the redesigned fascia and aluminum hood with a raised, carbon fiber insert. The fascia includes a front splitter and new vertical fog lamps. The fog lamp area includes air intakes designed for brake cooling. The hood features front-mounted air extractors that direct air precisely over the car. Visually, this center section, in satin black carbon fiber, communicates the car’s high-performance intent as a visual contrast to the car’s exterior color. Functionally, the air extractor is a key in connecting airflow closely to the bodywork, creating aerodynamic downforce. The carbon fiber center section reduces the mass of the hood. High-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps and fog lamps are standard. The rear of the car includes a diffuser and spoiler, also functional elements that enhance the car’s aerodynamics.

Wheels and Tires – New-design, 20-inch forged aluminum wheels, which are lighter than the 20-inch wheels used on the Camaro SS, are used with new Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar G:2 tires developed specifically for the ZL1.

Interior – ZL1 is tailored for high-performance driving. The front seats feature microfiber suede inserts. Other enhancements include a redesigned steering wheel, alloy pedals, Head-Up Display with unique performance readouts and the “four-pack” auxiliary gauge system featuring a boost readout.

Production details
All of the Camaro exterior colors will be offered with the ZL1, but black is the only interior color. The unique exterior features are complemented with a black center section on the hood. Inside, the Camaro ZL1 has heated leather seats with microfiber inserts and ZL1 logos embroidered on the front headrests. Microfiber suede is repeated as an accent on the instrument panel, adding a richer look to the interior. The ZL1 will include the same content as the current 2SS package and include the following new or unique features:

Six-way power driver and passenger seats
Unique instrument panel and door panel inserts; and ZL1-logo sill plates
Steering wheel audio controls with Bluetooth capability
Wireless PDIM and USB-port
Boston Acoustics premium audio system
Rear parking assist
Rear camera system (displayed in the inside rearview mirror).

Engineers have already driven Camaro ZL1 prototypes extensively at demanding road courses in the U.S. and Germany, with final testing being completed through the balance of 2011.

The truck award was presented to GM CEO Dan Akerson before the 111th Army-Navy Game at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field. Chevrolet is the Official Vehicle of the Army-Navy Game.

"On the outside the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado HD appears to have been given a subtle makeover, but it's what's under the skin that makes this truck a winner," said Motor Trend Editor-in-Chief Angus MacKenzie. The new 2011 Silverado HD built in Flint, Mich., and Fort Wayne, Ind., was introduced this summer, featuring new frame and suspension designs, and a more powerful Duramax diesel engine with 397 horsepower, 765 lb.-ft. of torque, and 11 percent better fuel-economy. As a result, the 2011 Silverado HD is capable of towing up to 21,700 pounds, or carrying 6,635 pounds of payload. The new Silverado HD also offers available confidence- and control-related features specifically for towing including electronic trailer sway control, hill start assist and smart exhaust brake system.

"With more capability and technology than ever before, we believe the Chevrolet Silverado HD sets the bar for heavy-duty trucks," said Akerson. "It's a great honor to have such a respected authority as Motor Trend agree."

Chris Theodore is a wily veteran of the auto business, a seasoned development engineer whose impressive resume includes vehicles as thoughtfully executed as the Chrysler minivan and as tightly focused as the Ford GT.

As one of the consultant judges on this year's COTY panel, Chris brought the deep insight and professional skepticism you'd expect of someone who's spent his entire working life making cars. But our 2011 Car of the Year, Chevrolet's ground-breaking Volt, has blown him away.

Like all of us on the staff at Motor Trend, Chris is an enthusiast, a man who'll keep a thundering high-performance V-8 in his garage no matter how high gas prices go. But he nailed the Volt's place in automotive history: "If this is the brave new world, then it's an acceptable definition."

In the 61-year history of the Car of the Year award, there have been few contenders as hyped -- or as controversial -- as the Chevrolet Volt. The Volt started life an Old GM project, then arrived fully formed as a symbol of New GM, carrying all the emotional and political baggage of that profound and painful transition. As a result, a lot of the sound and fury that has surrounded the Volt's launchhas tended to obscure a simple truth: This automobile is a game-changer.

ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE
The Volt boasts some of the most advanced engineering ever seen in a mainstream American automobile. The powertrain allows the car to run as an EV, a series hybrid, or a parallel hybrid, depending on how far you drive and how you drive. The secret sauce is how GM controls the powerflow between the 149-horse electricmotor, the generator, and the 84-horse,1.4-liter naturally aspirated internal-combustion engine. It's fundamentally different from the way Toyota handles things in the Prius.

Attention to detail is impressive. The Volt's wheels, for example, are forged aluminum to reduce weight, shod with specially developed low-rolling-resistance tires. While some consumers may never need to regularly put gas in the car, the internal combustion engine will fire automatically from time to time to ensure the integrity of the fueling system, and to prevent the vehicle being stuck with a tank full of stale gas. And finally, the Volt is built on GM's highly flexible Global Compact Vehicle Architecture (other GCVA vehicles include the Chevy Cruze, the Opel Astra, and the forthcoming Opel Zafira minivan), which means its advanced powertrain can be easily adapted to other vehicle formats.

ADVANCEMENT IN DESIGN
As Toyota discovered with the Camry Hybrid, people who want to buy a vehicle with a highly efficient powertrain want everyone else to know they're driving a car with a highly efficient powertrain. Chevy clearly has watched and learned. The Volt's exterior design brings a unique look to the Chevy lineup. It's a compact that's clearly different from other small Chevys, yet clearly still one of the family. The front end graphic is outstanding -- strong, confident, and tastefully upscale.

Much of the exterior design obviously has been driven by the pursuit of aerodynamic efficiency. The sharp rear corners and high decklid with integrated spoiler are all about managing the airflow at the rear of the car. But the black graphic under the side windows and the heat-soaking black roof-both artifacts designed to link the car with the fundamentally different Volt Concept-seem somewhat gratuitous.

The interior is relatively conventional, save for the impressive high-resolution-and highly interactive-instrument and center stack LCD screens, and the center stack itself, whose shiny, white surfacing and slightly hard-to-see, touch-sensitive switchgear seems like an obvious homage to Apple's iPod. (If you can't stand Steve Jobs, the center stack can also be finished in dark gray.) Plastic panels in the front doors allow an effective, low-cost means of changing the Volt's interior colorway.

EFFICIENCY
The Volt's unique powertrain not only defies established labels; it also defies established methods of determining fuel economy. After all, this is a vehicle that will complete the standard EPA fuel economy test in full EV mode, making conventional mileage calculations impossible.

While it is entirely possible that a consumer able to use the Volt in pure EV mode most of the time could use no more than a tank of gas-9.3 gallons-a year (because as noted earlier the car will automatically start the internal-combustion engine at regular intervals to keep the fuel system functional and the gas fresh), it is not a perpetual-motion machine. It requires energy to move. Our testing showed that, in EV mode, the Volt uses energy at the rate 32.0 kW-hr/100 miles or a notional 105 mpg (based on the EPA calculation that a gallon of gas contains 33.7 kW-hr of energy). The internal-combustion engine sips gas at the rate of about 40 mpg.

In a multiday, 299-mile test that involved a mixture of normal freeway and stop/start city driving (no hypermiling) -- and recharging the car overnight, as most consumers would -- we used a total of 58.6 kW-hr of electrical energy, and 2.36 gallons of gas. Just counting the gas, the Volt returned 126.7 mpg. Converting the gas used to energy used (79.5 kW-hr) and adding that figure to the electrical energy used gave us a notional 72.9 mpg. That's impressive.

SAFETY
The Volt's standard passive safety equipment starts with a complement of eight airbags, including dual-stage front bags, kneebags, and side-impact bags for the driver and front passenger and roof-rail mounted head curtain bags that protect all four passengers. Active safety features include anti-lock brakes, traction control, and stability control.

The Volt chassis is nimble and responsive, and the low-rolling-resistance tires deliver better than average grip for this type of rubber. The Volt is not a sports car, but the acceleration (0-60 mph in 8.8 seconds in pure EV mode, and 8.7 in combined gas/electric mode) is competitive with conventional compacts, and more than adequate for safely merging onto fast-moving freeways.

VALUE
All of that technology is expensive, which accounts for the Volt's $41,000 price tag. Engineering the Volt required considerable investment by GM in vehicle systems integration that would normally be handed off to outside suppliers and contractors. But the cost of the Volt's powertrain and associated systems will come down as GM perfects lower cost components and is able to amortize the development across a larger number of vehicles. Meanwhile, consumers can apply for a $7500 federal tax grant, plus state grants, where available, to offset the Volt's relatively high purchase price. And our testing suggests that even if drivers regularly went 80 miles between charges, the Volt is significantly cheaper to run than regular hybrids.
Using EPA average figures of 12¢ per kW-hr for electricity, and $2.80 for a gallon of gas, the Volt costs just 3.8¢ a mile to run in EV mode, and 7¢ a mile with the gas engine running.

PERFORMANCE OF INTENDED FUNCTION
The Volt absolutely delivers on the promise of the vehicle concept as originally outlined by GM, combining the smooth, silent, efficient, low-emissions capability of an electric motor with the range and flexibility of an internal combustion engine.

It is a fully functional, no-compromise compact automobile that offers consumers real benefits in terms of lower running costs.

The more we think about the Volt, the more convinced we are this vehicle represents a real breakthrough. The genius of the Volt's powertrain is that it is actually capable of operating as a pure EV, a series hybrid, or as a parallel hybrid to deliver the best possible efficiency, depending on your duty cycle. For want of a better technical descriptor, this is world's first intelligent hybrid. And the investment in the technology that drives this car is also an investment in the long-term future of automaking in America.

Moonshot. Game-changer. A car of the future that you can drive today, and every day. So what should we call Chevrolet's astonishing Volt? How about, simply, Motor Trend's 2011 Car of the Year.

Chevrolet beats Ford in heavy-duty pickup "Rumble in the Rockies"

Which automaker has the most "heavy-duty" pickup?
Pickuptrucks.com decided to torture test Chevy and Ford to see which would come out ahead in towing impossibly heavy loads up impossibly difficult hills. They called it the "Rumble in the Rockies."

The result was no surprise to us at Jim Butler Chevrolet: Chevy won.

Chevy challenged Ford to a Rocky Mountain tow test. Ford said no. Chevy moved forward and invited PickupTrucks.com and Diesel Power magazine to oversee the test with trucks bought off the lot from Ford and Chevy dealers.

Pickuptrucks.com compared a 2011 Chevy Silverado 3500 LT (397 horsepower, 765 pounds-feet of torque, 6.6-liter Duramax V-8) and a 2011 Ford F-350 XLT (400 hp, 800 pounds-feet, 6.7-liter Power Stroke V-8) and tested them pulling an 18,920 pound trailer up and down a 7.6 mile stretch of I-70 from Dillon, Colo., to the Eisenhower Tunnels, the highest vehicular tunnels in the U.S. at 11,000 feet elevation.
Pickuptrucks.com editor Mike Levine says the trucks were probably the most evenly matched heavy duties that they had tested. Besides the same rear axle ratios, the $54,805 8,440-pound Ford was just $65 and 220 pounds more than the $54,740 8,220-pound Silverado.

Gross combined weight rating for the Chevy was 27,140 pounds before four adult males jumped in and added another 800 pounds, for a grand total of 27,940 pounds, or 96% of the Silverado's maximum gross combined weight rating. The total for the Ford F-350 was 28,160 pounds, or 94% of the Super Duty's maximum GCWR.

The trucks were tested for towing time up the hill and exhaust brake effectiveness going down.
The fastest time up the grade for the Ford was 10 minutes, 46.8 seconds at an average speed of 42.41 mph.

The Chevy Silverado was significantly faster:
It finished more than two minutes ahead of the F-350, in 8 minutes, 38.2 seconds. Average speed cruising up to 11,000 feet was 53.63 mph, 11.22 mph faster on average than the Ford.

Going downhill with exhaust brakes on in both trucks, we had to apply the wheel brakes 10 to 11 times in the Ford to keep its speed below 60 mph. We had to hit the wheel brakes 1 to 2 times in the Chevy to keep its speed under 60 mph.

NEW CHEVROLET CRUZE ECO ACHIEVES SEGMENT-LEADING 42 MPG ON THE HIGHWAY

Hybrid-Like Fuel Economy Starts at $18,895; Goes on Sale in January

DETROIT – The official fuel economy numbers for the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco are in and they’re good. Segment-leading good. It delivers an EPA-estimated 42 mpg on the highway (manual transmission models), with equally impressive city fuel economy of 28 mpg.

Cruze Eco’s highway fuel economy beats non-hybrid segment competitors – including 23 percent greater highway fuel economy than the Honda Civic – as well as the Ford Fiesta subcompact and many hybrid models. In fact, it’s better than Ford Fusion Hybrid, Nissan Altima Hybrid and Toyota Camry Hybrid.

“Chevrolet Cruze continues to redefine the compact segment, offering class-leading standard safety features, upscale amenities – as well as hybrid-like fuel economy without the price,” said Chuck Russell, vehicle line director. “The Cruze Eco is in a league of its own and will challenge perceptions of the efficiency available in a more affordable non-hybrid.”

The Cruze Eco carries an MSRP of $18,895 (including destination charge). It goes on sale in January.

To achieve its segment-leading fuel economy, Cruze’s engineers focused on aerodynamic performance, mass optimization and powertrain enhancements. The refinements in each area paid big dividends towards the car’s overall efficiency, while providing engineers with valuable information to help enhance the efficiency of future Chevrolet models.

“We left no stone unturned or piece of sheet metal un-weighed,” said Russell. “Our engineers were comprehensive and thorough when it came to evaluating and modifying the aspects of the car’s performance that contribute to fuel economy.”

Aero enhancements
Aerodynamic improvements over non-Eco manual-transmission models contributed approximately 6 mpg to the Cruze’s EPA-estimated 42 mpg highway fuel economy. Many were developed and refined in more than 500 hours of wind-tunnel testing of the Chevy Volt, which shares a core architecture with the Cruze. Examples include the upper grille, which has more “closeouts” to improve aerodynamics, a lower front air dam extension, a rear spoiler, a lowered ride height and underbody panels that smooth airflow beneath the car.

The Eco model also features an all-new technology in the compact segment: a lower front grille air shutter that closes at higher speeds to reduce aerodynamic drag and opens at lower speeds to optimize engine-cooling airflow. Another contributor to reduced drag is the use of ultra-low rolling resistance 17-inch Goodyear tires (used with lightweight wheels), which are also used on the Volt.

As a result of the aero enhancements, aerodynamic drag was reduced by 10 percent over a non-Eco model, with a coefficient of drag of 0.298. That places Cruze at the top of the class for mainstream compact cars.

Mass optimization
More than 42 changes were made on the Eco to reduce weight. It weighs in at 3,009 pounds (1,365 kg), compared to the 3,223 pounds (1,462 kg) of the Cruze 1LT. The diet program for the Cruze challenged engineers to look at all aspects of the vehicle’s construction, including hundreds of weld flanges on the vehicle. They were reduced 1 mm to 2 mm in length, which saved several pounds, while the sheet metal gauge thickness was reduced by about 0.1 mm in select components. This saved weight while preserving structural integrity.

Lighter wheels and tires are used on the Eco. They’re stylish, polished 17-inch alloy units with Goodyear tires that weigh only 36.5 pounds (16.6 kg) apiece. That’s 5.3 pounds (2.4 kg) less than the 16-inch wheel/tires of the Cruze 1LT for a complete savings to the vehicle of 21.2 pounds (9.6 kg).

Efficient powertrain
Cruze Eco is powered by power-dense Ecotec 1.4L turbocharged engine and a standard six-speed manual transmission. The transmission’s gearing is optimized for the model’s specific 17-inch wheel/tire combination and includes aggressive ratios for first and second gear coupled with a highly efficient, “taller” sixth-gear ratio for highway driving. That means engine rpm is reduced on the highway, which in turn reduces fuel consumption. A six-speed automatic transmission is available, with EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of 26 city and 37 highway.

The Ecotec 1.4L turbo’s power ratings are 138 horsepower (103 kW) and 148 lb.-ft. of torque (200 Nm) between 1,850 rpm and 4,900 rpm. The wide rpm range for the maximum torque – a specific trait of turbocharged engines – helps the engine deliver a better driving experience and performance. The turbocharger is integrated within the exhaust manifold, for reduced weight and greater packaging flexibility.

The engine also features premium design elements that give it world-class smoothness and durability while also contributing to the Cruze Eco’s lower curb weight. They include a cast iron block with a hollow frame structure, hollow-cast camshafts and a plastic intake manifold.

Comparing the competitors
As a result of aerodynamic improvements, mass reduction and powertrain optimizaton, the Cruze Eco offers the best fuel economy in the compact segment, while delivering hybrid-like fuel economy without the hybrid price. SEMA show debut-T-top Camaro Custom! Remember the days?

DETROIT – The 21st century rebirth of the Chevrolet Camaro opens a new chapter when the 2011 Camaro Convertible premieres at the Los Angeles International Auto Show on Nov. 17.

The Camaro Convertible will arrive in Chevrolet showrooms in February 2011. Starting price will be $30,000, including $850 destination. (Full details will be released later this year.)

"The Convertible will make the all-new Camaro, already a smash-hit, even more desirable to a greater range of drivers," says Chris Perry, vice president of Chevrolet Marketing.

The Convertible model will be available in the same basic model offering as the Camaro Coupe. The standard model will have a 312-hp Direct Injection V6 engine featuring 29 miles per gallon on the highway. The SS model will feature the 6.2-liter V8 engine producing 426 hp. A six-speed manual transmission will be standard, with an optional six-speed automatic.

Camaro is America's most popular sports car, seizing leadership in U.S. sales with the coupe model that launched in spring of 2009 as a 2010 model. The right to purchase one of the first Convertibles was recently sold at the Barrett-Jackson auction for $205,000, with all proceeds donated to charity.

Before the 2011 Chevy Cruze has even hit our showroom there are already reviews and comparisons being made with the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic. Guess what? We are winning! The Mobile Electronics Competition Association (MECA) did their own little review of all three of the vehicles........

For the competition, MECA judges used three evaluations: a sound-pressure test to measure sound volume, real-time analysis to measure audio fidelity, and the judges’ evaluations of the listening experience.

“Audiophiles believe that rating audio performance requires critical listening as well as measuring output,” said Steve Stern, MECA president. “Sound provides a baseline rating of the potential of a sound system, but does not necessarily equate to a great-sounding system. Only the human ear can gauge how natural and believable the listening experience is.”

The competition included three, comparably equipped cars with factory-installed audio systems, including:

2011 Chevrolet Cruze 2LT with the Pioneer nine-speaker sound system available as a $445 option on Cruze LT and LTZ models
2010 Toyota Corolla LE, with a six-speaker sound system available starting at $490 on Corolla LE models
2010 Honda Civic EX, with a six-speaker, 160-watt sound system included on EX models and above

For the tests, all three sound systems were set to the factory presets.

For the sound-pressure test, judges used a decibel meter to measure sound volume. The Cruze took first place, delivering 112.9 dB of pressure without distortion, compared to 105.6 dB for Corolla and 105.2 dB for Civic. That seven decibel advantage represents nearly double the volume of competitors’ systems.

The real-time analyzer gauged audio fidelity by measuring how accurately the systems recreated preset frequency tones. The Cruze finished third, with 14 points out of a possible 40, compared to 22 points for Civic and 24 points for Corolla.

For the subjective evaluation, judges listened to the same music selections in each car for consistency, and awarded points based on system noise, tonality, realism, staging, and placement. The Cruze took first place, with an average of 74.83 points out of a possible 100, compared to 69.75 for Corolla, and 58.83 for Civic.

““The most important measure of an audio system is how well it recreates the experience of listening to a live performance,” said Stern. “From that perspective, the Cruze was clearly the best of the group, delivering more presence, more realistic sub-bass, and silky smooth midrange.

“In our competitions, stock systems typically score between 55 and 65 points,” Stern said. “With nearly 75 points, the Cruze delivers the performance we would expect in a luxury car – not an $18,000 car.”

That evaluation is music to the ears of Matt Kirsch, lead audio engineer for the Cruze.

“We set out to deliver a far better audio experience than a typical compact car,” said Kirsch. “As such, we used more speakers and more power to fill the Cruze with sound. We also spent a great deal of time tuning the sound system for ambiance and clarity, so sitting in the Cruze sounds like sitting in the front row at a concert hall.”

CHICAGO – In 1935, the United States’ population was a little more than 127 million. A first-class stamp cost 3 cents, Technicolor was introduced to motion pictures and the Detroit Tigers defeated the Chicago Cubs in a tough World Series. It was also the year Chevrolet introduced the Suburban.

In the seven and a half decades since its introduction, the Suburban became an icon and the industry’s longest-running model. In fact, Suburban is the first vehicle to reach 75 years of production and Chevrolet is commemorating the milestone with a new 2010 75th Anniversary Diamond Edition model.

“Times have changed, but the Suburban remains a fixture in the industry for private and professional customers who need truck-like towing capability with maximum passenger and cargo space,” said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet general manager. “The Suburban’s core capabilities and dependability have remained constant for more than seven decades and generations of people know that a Suburban will haul people and their gear.”

The original Suburban could seat eight, while easily removable seats provided a large, 75-inch-long by 77-inch-high (1,905 x 1,956 mm) cargo area. The 2010 Suburban seats up to nine, but offers up to 137.4 cubic feet (3,891 L) of cargo space when the second-row seats are folded and third-row seats are removed.

History of an icon

The idea for the Suburban was born out of a need for a heavier-duty, truck-based wagon. Through the early 1930s, most manufacturers offered car-based wagons for professional use. Open models with windows and rear seating were known as depot hacks, and were used to ferry passengers and their cargo around train stations and boat docks. Enclosed models, typically without rear seats, were known as sedan deliveries.

Bodywork for these early vehicles often consisted of wood sides and canvas tops; and while they were versatile, their car-based chassis and damage-prone bodies were compromises. Chevrolet began experimenting with an all-steel wagon body mounted on a commercial chassis in the mid-1930s, and the Suburban Carryall was launched in 1935.

Car-based commercial vehicles, including sedan deliveries, remained in production, but the heavy-duty chassis of the Suburban increasingly found favor with professional customers. In the post-World War II years, its popularity with private customers who appreciated its uncompromising capabilities increased steadily.

The Chevrolet Suburban hit the mainstream in the early 1990s, with the overall popularity of sport-utility vehicles. But while many customers were new to the Suburban then, it had garnered a legion of longtime owners who had purchased multiple examples over the years – using them to haul Little League teams and their equipment, tow a horse trailer or seat a work crew on the way to a job site.Here’s a timeline of significant moments in the Suburban’s first 75 years:

1935: Suburban Carryall introduced with a signature two-door body style that would last through 1967. Power came from Chevrolet’s stalwart “Stovebolt” inline-six that produced 60 horsepower (45 kW) for the half-ton chassis.

1937: New, streamlined exterior styling carried Art Deco cues, and horsepower from the Stovebolt six increased to 79 (59 kW).

1942: Production of almost all civilian cars and trucks halted during America’s involvement in World War II, although many Chevy trucks – including the Suburban’s body style – were pressed into military duty.

1947: The first significant redesign of the Chevrolet’s truck line – including Suburban – since before the war. Torque from the inline-six engine was 174 lb.-ft. (217 Nm) at only 1,200 rpm, giving the Suburban excellent towing capability.

1950: Suburban models are offered with either a tailgate/top-opening rear window configuration or conventional “barn doors” at the rear.

1955: Revolutionary new styling is introduced midway through the model year. Known as the “second series” design, it features a wraparound windshield and the elimination of running boards – the body is flush with the fenders for the first time. The second series model also introduces the ubiquitous small-block V-8.

1957: Factory-installed four-wheel drive is offered for the first time, with the famous NAPCO-supplied “Powr-Pak” system.

1960: Chevrolet institutes the C/K designations to denote models with 2WD (C) and 4WD (K). Front-end styling is also new.

1967: All-new styling of Chevy’s half-ton trucks is introduced, including Suburban. It carries a unique three-door arrangement with a single door on the driver’s side and front and rear doors on the passenger side. This configuration makes the Suburban popular with ambulance companies.

1973: A new generation of Chevy trucks is launched, with Suburban offered in a conventional four-door body style introduced for the first time. Its 129.5-inch (3,289 mm) wheelbase was only 0.5-inch (12.7 mm) shorter than the 2010 model’s. Also debuting is the Suburban three-quarter-ton model, which could be had with a 454 big-block engine that delivered 335 lb.-ft. of torque (455 Nm).

1975: Increased focus on interior comfort and amenities in the 1973 models bring more customers to Suburban for use as a personal vehicle. Chevrolet responds with more comfortable seats and greater amenities, including simulated buffalo hide vinyl upholstery, wood grain dash inserts, fully trimmed door panels and more.

1981: Updated styling brings stacked rectangular headlamps for the 1980s. The 4WD system adds automatic locking hubs and the 454 big-block is still offered, giving customers great towing capability.

1987: Electronically controlled fuel injection and a four-speed overdrive transmission bring greater efficiency.

1992: An all-new Suburban features sleek styling with flush glass and composite headlamps. The 5.7L small-block V-8 powers 1500 models, while the 454 (7.4L) engine is still available in the 2500 series. Other updates include four-wheel anti-lock brakes, Insta-Trac on four-wheel-drive models and a suspension system designed to provide a more carlike ride.

1998: OnStar and the full-time AutoTrac all-wheel-drive system are added. In Australia, right-hand-drive versions of the Suburban are offered through GM’s Holden brand.

2000: Launched in 1999 as a 2000 model, the next-generation Suburban brings new styling, new interiors and new powertrains. The engines include the Vortec 5.3L and 6.0L V-8s that were from the same Gen III V-8 “LS” family that debuted a couple of years earlier as the LS1 in the Corvette. Other new features include four-wheel disc brakes and a load-leveling suspension system.

2007: The latest generation of the Suburban is introduced, featuring a wind tunnel-shaped exterior and the elimination of traditional chrome front and rear bumpers. More efficient, comfortable and capable than ever, the Suburban continues to offer customers of all walks of life uncompromising capability and versatility.

At the 2010 New York Auto Show, Chevrolet debuted another trim level for the upcoming Cruze sedan, the 40-mpg Eco model. Simliar to the XFE trimmed Chevy vehicles that produced better gas mileage, offered FlexFuel technology, and still maintained engine power, a combination of these new technologies allows the Cruze Eco to hit that lofty 40 MPG number. The really cool part is Chevy is planning on producing 70% of Cruzes with the the 1.4-liter variable-valve timing turbo I-4, which is the foundation for he Eco model. How does Chevy plan on using the same engine for 70% of the Cruzes without making 70% of the Cruzes the Eco model.....Well that is because the engine isn't the only tweak that helps this Chevy make the astounding MPGs.

To start the front fascia on the Eco has a new, wind tunnel-massaged front fascia complete with a first-in-class "Aero Shutter." The engine cooling air inlet area below the grill opens and shuts during different types of driving. During stop-and-go driving the aero shutter is open. However, at higher speeds (or highway speeds) when cooling the turbocharged engine isn't as much of an issue, the shutter shuts, allowing for a more efficient air stream and a lower drag coefficient.

There's also a slim lower chin spoiler and "tire blockers," which we typically call spats. Moving on to the rear, there's a new fascia back there that's also been wind tunnel tested for more reduced drag. Surface area is further decreased by lowering the car by 10 mm compared to other Cruzes. There's a full-body underpanel to keep air from getting hung up on stuff like the exhaust and suspension components, as well as ultra low resistance tires shared with the Volt. Finally, there's an ultra-tall 6th gear (the Cruze Eco is manual-only) that allows the rpms to greatly drop when the vehicle is at cruising speed.

As you may imagine, Chevy has also done its very best to reduce mass as much as possible, going to as far as to shave welds down by a millimeter. But here's the thing: while working on the body in white, Chevy discovered that the mass-saving measures they made to the Eco could easily be applied to other Cruze models, which means that the not-quite-yet-on sale Cruze will have across the board improved mileage. The Chevy Cruze should go on sale in the 3rd quarter of 2010 with the Eco making it out of the gate by the 4th quarter of this year.

Even though the Cruze is positioning itself as a high mileage vehicle, Chevrolet has made the decision not to totally decontent the Eco. According to Chevy, people's tastes are changing and they want high mileage vehicles to have lots of creature comforts. For instance, the Eco ships with 17-inch forged aluminum wheels.

New Chevy Camaro Z28 spy photos

2012 Camaro Z28 with 6.2L supercharged V8 (6AT in this model). No confirmation yet on whether this is the LS9 or LSA motor. Best part is, GM was courteous enough to tape the engine specs on the dash: 6.2L supercharged V8, with Auto Transmission.

This Camaro Z28 was captured out testing with several other Camaros, as well as a Mustang GT500 (for comparison of course).

Under th front camo is a much lower front fascia with large center air intakes. The Z28's front design is already looking much like the latest Transformers 3 Bumblebee Camaro. The hood cowl seems to be slightly busty compared to the 2010 Camaro SS model.

The wheels are 20″ SP550 anodized black - 20×10 front and 20×11 rears. Wrapped in Goodyear Eagle F1 tires. The brake calipers very much resemble those from the Cadillac CTS-V.

Quad exhaust are at the rear, and the photographer described the sound from this car as “nothing short of unholy!”

Update: 2011 Chevy Silverado Heavy Duty- Jim Butler Chevy

At first glance, the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado doesn't appear to have changed much compared to its 2010 counterpart. But don't let their familiar faces fool you, because virtually all of the greasy bits have been substantially upgraded or replaced entirely. Like the competitive heavy-duty trucks from Ford and Dodge, Chevy offers its trucks in a huge array of configurations with varying passenger, payload and towing capacities and an array of gasoline and diesel engines.

We drove seven different variants over two days in the Allegheny Mountains of Western Maryland along with the latest models from Dodge and Ford for comparison's sake. While the sales volume in the heavy-duty truck segment is smaller than it was at its peak a few years ago, it comprises about 25 to 30 percent of all pickup sales.

The Silverado and Sierra HD pickups are available in 3/4-ton 2500 models and one-ton 3500 models. As you might guess after a quick perusal of the spec sheet, the 3/4- and one-ton designations are little more than a carryover nomenclature from bygone days when they were limited to those payloads. As all trucks have become more capable, even the light-duty 1500 can carry over 1,500 pounds. Depending on the configuration, 3/4-ton 2500 models now accommodate up to 4,192 pounds and the one-ton 3500 can haul 6,635 pounds. Both of those figures are better than Ford's corresponding F-250 and F-350 Super Duty models.

While Dodge has applied the styling of the latest light-duty Ram to its new HD trucks and Ford has fitted its F-Series with the boldest looking grille we've seen yet, Chevrolet has taken a more conservative approach. The front bumpers on the Chevy Silverado trucks are slightly reshaped, with bigger air intakes below the grille. The HD Silverado pickups are available in regular, extended and crew-cab styles with 6.5- or eight-foot cargo boxes. Both the 2500 and 3500 are available with the single-wheel rear axle while the 3500 can also be outfitted with the dual-wheel rear axle. Most of these combinations are also available with either a 6.0-liter Vortec gasoline V8 (below, left) or the 6.6-liter Duramax diesel V8 (below, right) and rear– or four-wheel drive.

The New Silverado HD trucks now offer Autonet WiFi. Autonet provides a small wireless router with a built-in 3G mobile broadband modem. As soon as the truck is started, the router fires up, connects automatically and provides internet access to anyone within about 50 feet of the vehicle. With Autonet and OnStar's built-in GPS receiver, commercial truck users can use their existing laptops or netbooks.

Peel away the bodywork and almost everything else is new, starting with the frame that forms the foundation of these beasts. The two main longitudinal rails are still hydro-formed, but they are now fully boxed from bumper to bumper. Only the larger chassis cabs retain a C-channel rear section to facilitate mounting whatever they end up carrying. A stiff frame is critical to durability and improving ride and handling, and in the not so distant past it was common to see the bed and cab of a pickup truck quivering independently over rough pavement. This new chassis and re-worked suspension, however, has greatly reduced that tendency and contributes to improved payload and towing capability.

At the front corners, an independent control-arm suspension setup is retained, and it's a unique setup in this segment. The Silverado HD control arms are now wider than before to foster better control and isolation. At the rear axle, the leaf springs have gone from 2.5 to three inches in width. According to GM engineers, the wider springs reduce the internal stresses, thereby improving durability and load carrying capacity. The leaf-spring-axle configuration is now asymmetrical for the first time, a move that cuts down on axle windup under acceleration and braking, neatly improving handling at the same time.

Hanging off the ends of the suspension members are bigger brakes than have ever been fitted to a GM truck. The rotors have grown from 12.8 to 14 inches in diameter at both axles and the swept area of the pads has increased by 13 percent. The new calipers and their resultant brake feel are much stiffer than before, giving you confident stopping power, especially when the truck is loaded.

For 2011, all single-rear wheel 2500 and 3500 models also receive full electronic stability control with trailer sway control. The system detects if the trailer is starting to oscillate back and forth as it would before washing away completely. If the sensors detect eminent calamity, the system alternately applies the truck's brakes from side-to-side until everything settles down again.

The 364-horsepower 6.0-liter Vortec V8 and 6L90 six-speed automatic are carryover from 2010, but they remain among the best gasoline truck engines available. However, for those who really need serious hauling capability, the optional 6.6-liter Duramax diesel V8 and Allison 1000 six-speed automatic transmission are the only way to go. Unlike the Blue Oval's Scorpion V8, the Duramax is not all-new, but it is heavily revised. Like other modern diesels, it now has a high-pressure common-rail injection system with piezoelectric injectors that can execute multiple pulses per ignition cycle. This allows the fuel delivery to be more precisely metered and spread out over a longer time so that combustion temperatures remain under control. Lower combustion temperatures help reduce NOx production so that the Duramax can meet the 2010 emissions standards.

The engine changes alone are not enough to make the Duramax clean. Like the Super Dutys and all of the six-cylinder German diesels in the States, GM has also incorporated a urea injection system to clean up whatever residual NOx is produced. The heated, 5.3-gallon urea tank is mounted on the frame rail adjacent to the oxidation catalyst and needs to be refilled about every 5,000 miles along with oil changes. In addition to running more cleanly, the Duramax also has improved fuel economy by about 11 percent, more power and torque and is much quieter than ever before. Heavy-duty trucks don't have to carry EPA window stickers, but according to GM's Spina, the 3500 diesel achieves a combined rating of about 17 miles per gallon.

All recent heavy-duty trucks have had a tow-haul mode that allows the driver to lightly apply the brake pedal for a couple of seconds and trigger automatic transmission downshifts when on a downhill grade. The diesel trucks also add exhaust gas braking that typically uses a bypass valve to increase the exhaust back pressure in the engine, forcing it to slow down. When carrying a heavy load or towing, this can help reduce the workload on the brakes dramatically. For its 2011 trucks, GM has taken this technology a significant step further. The existing exhaust gas braking systems are basically just on-off controllers, but with the new Duramax, the system monitors vehicle speed when you set the cruise control, and in addition to maintaining speed when going uphill, it uses the variable geometry vanes in the turbocharger to adjust the backpressure just enough to hold a constant speed when going downhill. Even without using the cruise control, just tapping the brake pedal for a few seconds will trigger exhaust braking and hold the speed on a grade without using the binders.

All of this is a long way of saying there's a lot of fancy technology at work underneath what most people think of as just simplistic beasts of burden. As it's not uncommon for the people who drive these trucks to accumulate 100,000 hard miles each year, it's particularly important to understand how well the drive.

Chevy Volt and Volt MPV5 Crossover to replace HHR

The long anticipated 2011 Chevrolet Volt is due out in the 4th quarter of 2010, and there has been speculation of the an earlier release of October 2010. The first Chevy Electric Vehicle with extended range, is expected to create a spike in Chevy sales this year.

The Chevy Volt MPV5 Crossover looks very much like the Volt sedan and features the very same powerplant, but has an HHR like design that allows for more interior and cargo room. Although Chevrolet hasn't fully committed to the production of this vehicle, we do anticipate some kind of variation of the Volt to target those that need a little bit more room in their vehicle.

Strong demand for the new Chevy Equinox has triggered GM to add extra production capacity for the crossover at its Oshawa, Ontario assembly plant. This will be the second production boost to keep up with the constant demand for the award-winning 2010 Chevrolet Equinox. Over the next several months the body shop at the Ingersoll plant will be expanded to provide the extra stamping capacity needed to supply Oshawa. The bodyshells will then be shipped 120 miles east to Oshawa where a third shift will build the Equinox alongside the Impala.

This VETTE is serious. If you know about Vette's and the latest battles between the ZR1 and Z06. The Z06 although slower than the ZR1 has just a little more responsive handling, especially on the race track. The 2011 Chevy Z07 Carbon is designed to do just that, attack the track and celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Corvette appearing at the 24 hours of LeMans.

What makes this the perfect car for the Vette enthusiast with an itch to hit the track? The brakes have been swapped out for carbon-ceramic brakes that keep the stoppers stopping even after several hot laps at the track. Chevy swapped out several body elements for a much lighter carbon-fiber panels which reduces the overall curb weight and increasing the power-to-weight ratio. Finally the suspension is fitted with a magnetic ride active damping system which provides the perfect degree of damping force in every cornering situation. All of the added tweaks plus the natuarlly aspirated 7.0L American Muscle under the hood, you should be set for the twisties on or off the track.

There will only be 500 Carbon editions made in 2011 The Z07 package provides the much respected Brembo brake system, upgraded wheels and tires and the MR suspension. Then the carbon fiber package adds the splitter, sill extensions and rear lip spoiler. Unfortunately, the hood is only available on the 500 limited edition cars. The Carbon and new option packages go on sale in late summer at prices that will be announced closer to launch date, so stay tuned.

GM supports Black Box Legislation--MUST Read

Just like the infamous "black boxes" (aka- event data recorders) found on airplanes to determine "what went wrong" when an airplanes crashes, cars can be equipped with similiar technology. It also has another perk, it helps Automakers improve their safety equipment.

Now Congress is looking to make these a standard feature of every vehicle sold in the United States of America, GM is all for it. GM also has been putting "black box" technology in vehicles since 1995 to save data during accidents that airbags are deployed. The recorders save the last few seconds of data before a crash from a number of different sensors. GM is not only welcoming this legislation but also think the information should be made available to determine the true cause of accidents.

GM Confirms 2011 Chevrolet Camaro Z28

While at the Frankfurt Motor Show, representatives of GM confirmed reports that the Camaro Z28 will be built and will be available in late 2011. Known details of the model so far: it will have a 6.2-liter V8, although there are no confirmed power numbers the same engine powers the Cadillac CTS-V, where it makes 556 horsepower and 551 pound-feet of torque. The Z28 will also feature updated 20-inch wheels in a gunmetal finish. Other exterior features include a mesh grille with updated badges, a bigger hood scoop to accommodate the new engine, a restyled rear bumper cover and a taller lip spoiler.

Chevy Unveils Redesigned 2011 Silverado Heavy-Duty Pickups

Last week at the Chicago auto show, Chevrolet unveiled the redesigned 2011 Silverado Heavy-Duty pickup truck. The most notable new feature is thier 6.6- liter Duramax turbodiesel engine with a six-speed Allison automatic transmission. Other mentionable points include class-leading torque and fuel economy with quicker acceleraction and sixty-three percent reduced exhaust emissions from the Duramax engine. Exterior changes include a new louvered hood, front bumper, grille and available 20-inch wheels. The Silverado heavy-duty line up, which has been extended to include 11 2500HD models and 8 3500HD models that can have either single or dual rear wheels. Various cab and cargo-bed configurations are available. Three trim levels are also offered: the base work truck, midlevel LT, and premium-grade LTZ.

Chevrolet Considering Cruze SS and Four-Door Coupe to fill Small, Sporty Car Segment

Recent reports have surfaced stating that Chevrolet is looking for a new car to fill the small, sporty car segment and the possible contender is the Cruze SS and a four-door coupe version. The Cruze SS will feature a 260 horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder from the Colbalt SS and Solstice GXP. Other possible modifications would include an all-wheel drive system, which would mitigate the effects of torque steer common to front-wheel drive cars, and the torsion beam rear axle will need to be swapped for a multi-link setup.
