2016 Chevrolet Models Offer Google and Apple Smartphone Integration

Chevy becomes first brand to roll out both platforms across a broad range of models

After offering 4G LTE Wi-Fi on its 2015 models, Chevrolet announces its intent to continue setting the technology pace as it will offer both Google’s Android Auto and Apple’s CarPlay on the majority of 2016 model year vehicles.

As more news about Chevy’s 2016 models such as the Malibu and Volt slowly unveil, this next step once again sets the benchmark for technology in vehicles and new cars at Jim Butler Chevrolet, Missouri’s No. 1 Chevy dealer. Touch screen systems in vehicles that act like smartphones are one of the top demands of consumers, and Chevrolet has answered the call.

“We believe that it is a key factor for customers and a reason for purchase,” GM’s Senior Vice President of Global Connect Customer Experience Alicia Boler-Davis said to AutoNews. “It is a differentiation.”

How the integration works

A driver’s smartphone plugs into the vehicle’s USB port to active either CarPlay or Android Auto. The usual Chevrolet MyLink system gives way to either CarPlay or Android Auto. The touchscreen will contain icons for the phone, maps, music players and other familiar features found on a smartphone.

Only functions that have been approved safe for use in moving vehicles will be allowed, and many of the applications will be operated through voice command. Some, however, will still be used with the touchscreen. One such example is reading aloud of incoming text messages but not displaying them so the driver can keep his or her eyes on the road.

The integration capability will work with any 2016 models with the available MyLink infotainment system. A move like this will not only delight Chevy owners who enjoy a vehicle with good technology but also may draw more customers into the Chevrolet brand. For those on either side, Jim Butler Chevrolet in Fenton, MO, is ready to help you with your new Chevy purchase and service!
